"The Cove" Film Fundraiser

Eastwood's IMPACT group is running a fundraiser on Friday November 20 at 5:00pm at the Princess Cinema on 6 Princess Street in Waterloo.  IMPACT has secured a private screening of the award winning documentary "The Cove"  The cost is $10 and all proceeds will be going towards IMPACTS initiatives for this year.  "The Cove" follows a team of activists and filmmakers into a secluded cove in Japan.  This cove has been kept a secret for years, and all media are prohibited from entering.  Viewer discretion is advised as some scenes of animal cruelty are graphic.  To get your name on the Guest List see the IMPACT team in the Lower Foyer at lunch.

Holocaust Guest Speakers

The Eastwood History Department has arranged, through the generous support of Barrday Inc. of Cambridge, for two Holocaust survivors to come and speak with our grade 10 history students on Wednesday November 25, 2009.  Students will have the rare opportunity to hear about the horrors of the Nazi Holocaust from those who lived through it to tell their story today, so that such atrocities may be prevented from ever happening again.

During period 2, all grade 10 history students will proceed to the auditorium to hear from Leonard Vis who was born in Amsterdam/Holland in 1930.  Mr. Vis comes from a modern Orthodox Jewish home. He can trace his family origins back to before the French Revolution.  He has a brother (born in 1934) who lives in Amsterdam, and a sister (born in 1935) who lives in Tel Aviv.  Leonard, his parents and siblings survived the Holocaust in Holland by being hidden.

During period 4, all grade 10 history students will meet in the auditorium with Gershon Israel Willinger who was born in Amsterdam, Holland in 1942 to German-Jewish parents who were murdered in Sobibor in July 1943. First, as a one-year-old, orphaned child he was placed in hiding. But, in 1944, as a two-year-old child he was deported with a children transport to the Bergen-Belsen concentration camp in Germany and later transported to the infamous Theresienstadt camp in Czechoslovakia where he was liberated in 1945 as a three-year-old child.
