What is Co-op? Co-op is an experiential learning course. Students are placed at a work placement and earn high school credits and gain valuable work experience at the same time. They will be developing employable skills with a real company. There is an in-class pre-employment component to the course. Students are also required to participate in integration days throughout the semester. How many credits can I earn? Co-op students can earn from 2 to 5 credits in a semester. A one credit co-op is available for continuous entry students. How do I find a placement? Students get to choose from a wide variety of placements covering all sectors of employment. The co-op teachers find new placements each semester. Students get to apply to the placements that they are interested in. Is placement automatic? No. To get a placement students will need a resume, cover letter and go through an interview; just like applying for a job. The co-op teachers help students prepare for the placement application process in the pre-employment part of the course. Do I get paid? No, students earn credits at their placement instead of money. But it is not unusual for students to get part time or summer jobs through their placement. Some students have even been offered full time positions after completing their placement. |
